UNZA gears up for ZUSA games

The University of Zambia (UNZA) is buzzing with excitement as the Zambia University Sports Association (ZUSA) Games are set to take place at Mukuba University on Thursday, May 16, 2025.

The ZUSA games will feature a range of sports such as football, basketball, athletics, chess, badminton, netball, table tennis, as well as volleyball.

A variety of students from various universities will be in attendance, such as Copperbelt University, Kwame Nkrumah University, and Levy Mwanawasa Medical University.

University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU), Secretary of Sports and Recreation, Tatenda Mutepuka, is confident that this year’s games will be a turning point for the university’s sports teams.

“The union’s long-term goal is beyond competing hard in the ZUSA games, but in every competition we compete carrying the unza flags,we want to show the world we are UNZA,” he said.

He further emphasised the union’s long-term goal of excellence in sports.

“We are engaging professional coaches to take up these sports clubs to ensure good talent grooming of these athletes, we also want to align the overall development by ensuring our technical and student athletes are well kept and needs are attended to,” Mutepuka said.

One student athlete who showcases this spirit is Zimba Hastings, who is also known as ZH Sibweni, who was bubbling with confidence and expressed his determination.

“I am participating in the upcoming ZUSA Games, competing in the long-distance races of 5 km and 10 km. I am fully prepared and motivated, just like any athlete who has been training hard for the competition,” he said.

He further urged fellow students to participate as the games are aimed at bringing students together to understand that university life isn’t just about academics but also about excelling in sports to stay fit and active.

And UNZASU Publicity Secretary, Chola Pandwe said he is confident of soaring to new heights and claiming gold in the high jump event.

As the event is underway, students from across the country will come together to celebrate excellence, sportsmanship and friendship.
