The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has kicked off sensitisation and awareness activities in schools and communities to prevent further exposure of minors to gambling.

In an interview with the Lusaka Star, Tuesday , LCC Public Relations Officer, Bulumba Mangelo warned that individuals found in possession of illegal bonanza machines are likely to face a fine and/or serve jail time.

However, Mr Mangelo stated that school-going children caught engaging in gambling will not face legal action, as they are considered victims.

“Pupils will be sensitised on the dangers of gambling, particularly through school-based outreach,” he stated.

Mr Mangelo also disclosed that over 45 gaming machines (bonanzas) have been seized due to illegal operations and underage gambling in Lusaka between May 19 and 20, 2025.

He emphasised that a directive to remove unlicensed bonanzas had not been adhered to, prompting the latest seizure.

Mangelo added that although bonanza machines are legal under certain conditions, they are not permitted to operate in grocery shops or be accessible to children.

“It is not allowed for shop owners to have bonanzas in their shops,” he explained.

“Business licences will be revoked from shop owners found with bonanzas in their shops because it is illegal.”

Mr Mangelo called on gambling machine owners to ensure the machines are placed in appropriate locations and that access to children is strictly prohibited.
