The University of Zambia (UNZA) Vice Chancellor, Mundia Muya, has called on students and the entire UNZA community to actively participate in the development of Zambia’s tourism industry through cultural promotion and preservation.
Speaking during the MTN-UNZA Tourism and Cultural Day celebration at UNZA Graduation Square, Friday, Professor Muya stated that cultural tourism drives economic growth, creates jobs, and promotes cultural heritage.
“As a university, we need to reflect on and appreciate the significance of our cultural heritage,” he emphasised. “Zambia’s diverse cultural landscape is a treasure trove of traditions, customs, and history that can be leveraged to promote tourism and foster development.”
Prof. Muya added that cultural heritage is an integral part of national identity and urged the university to engage with local communities to understand their needs and initiate projects that support cultural preservation and tourism development.
Speaking at the same event, the University of Eswatini Dean of Students, Sibusiso Dlamini, implored students to strike a balance between modernity and tradition.
“Students must respect and appreciate their cultural heritage while embracing modern advancements and innovations. It is important that people wear their culture with pride,” Dlamini said.Meanwhile, MTN Zambia has partnered with the University of Zambia (UNZA) to provide data at an affordable price to UNZA students.
