UNZA Athletes shine at ZUSA games

The University of Zambia (UNZA) has once again stamped its authority on the national university sports scene, emerging as the overall winner at the just-ended Zambia University Sports Association (ZUSA) Phase 2 Games held at Mukuba University in the Copperbelt Province.

Displaying remarkable athleticism, teamwork and resilience, UNZA athletes clinched numerous gold medals and accolades across a range of sporting disciplines, reinforcing the university’s reputation as a dominant force not just in academics but also in competitive sports.

A standout performance in the competition came from the UNZA Athletics team, which broke the previous records by securing an impressive 39 medals comprising 20 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze. This achievement not only surpasses last year’s total of 37 medals but also marks a historic milestone, with the team finishing first in both the men’s and women’s categories.

In team sports, the UNZA Men’s Rugby Team delivered a splendid performance, pushing their way to gold and earning top honors with commanding displays of power and strategy.

Not to be outdone, the UNZA Ladies 3×3 Basketball Team thrilled spectators with their sharp coordination and court dominance, eventually taking home the gold medal after a series of electrifying matches.

The impressive results have drawn praise from the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU), uplauding the athletes and coaching staff for their dedication and outstanding contribution to the institution’s sporting success.

“The university congratulates every athlete and coach who contributed to this success, making the institution proud,” said a statement from UNZASU, posted on its official Facebook page on Sunday.

“These victories showcase the commitment, hard work and excellence that define UNZA sports. With this impressive performance, UNZA has solidified its position as a powerhouse in university sports.”

The ZUSA Phase 2 Games brought together student athletes from across the country, and UNZA’s commanding presence underscored the strength of its sporting programs and the depth of talent among its student body.
