Last night, President Hakainde Hichilema declared an end to the period of national mourning for Dr. Lungu, following what he described as a reversal by the late President’s family on the agreed funeral arrangements.

Family Spokesperson, Makebi Zulu commended the SA government for its non-interference, respect for the Constitution and recognition of the family’s rights and wishes.

In a press statement issued today, Mr. Zulu stated that burying the late former President Lungu in SA is in accordance with the family’s wishes for a private ceremony.”

This period has been deeply emotional for the family, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support and condolences extended from across the continent and the globe,” he said.

He added that the Lungu family continues to seek peace and unity among fellow Zambians during this difficult time.

He advised that details regarding the funeral arrangements and burial will be shared with the Zambian and South African public in due course.
