A fatal accident at Kalumbila Mine has prompted urgent calls for improved safety standards in Zambia’s mining sector, following the death of a dump truck driver at Sentinel Pit on June 21.

In statement, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Principal Public Relations Officer, Mwaka Ndawa said preliminary reports say the driver lost control of the vehicle while descending into the pit, struck a hole and the truck subsequently caught fire.

The Ministry described the incident as “tragic” and is calling for reinforced safety measures across the industry.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss , the loss of a single life during the course of duty is one too many. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved family, the company, and fellow workers during this difficult time,” Ndawa said.

Ndawa emphasised that Mining remains one of Zambia’s most crucial economic sectors, yet also among the most dangerous, emphasising the need for urgent action to protect mine workers.

“This incident is a harrowing reminder of the critical importance of Occupational Safety and Health at work,” Ndawa added.”

We are committed to ending mine accidents and ensuring the highest safety standards are maintained throughout the mining sector.”

Ndawa further said that the Ministry will collaborate with the Mine Safety Department and other relevant agencies to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
