Government has commended the Media Self-Regulation Council of Zambia (MSCZ) for its efforts in enhancing public trust and promoting responsible journalism across the country.

Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa said an empowered and self-regulating media sector is essential to the health of democracy, governance systems and the country’s development agenda.

Speaking during the official launch of the MSCZ Secretariat in Lusaka, Mr Mweetwa said the launch marks a significant step in creating a space for dialogue, reform and growth of responsibility within the media fraternity.

“The government believes in the power of the media as a critical partner in advancing national development, not as an enemy or adversary,” Mr. Mweetwa said.

He further urged the MSCZ Ombudsman, who will head the newly launched Secretariat, to discharge their duties without fear or favor, emphasizing the importance of impartiality and professionalism.

Speaking at the same event, Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Zambia) Board Chairperson Lorraine Chisanga reaffirmed the organization’s support for the MSCZ.

She applauded the council for reaching the milestone and reiterated MISA’s commitment as both a founding institution and a continuing partner in promoting media self-regulation in Zambia.

Meanwhile, MSCZ Chairperson Kennedy Mambwe called on members of the public to report any misconduct or violations of media ethics.

He said the launch of the Secretariat was a bold statement from journalists who are ready to be held accountable to the public and are willing to commit to the MSCZ Code of Ethics.

“This launch shows that journalists are taking the initiative to regulate themselves and uphold professional standards,” Mr. Mambwe stated.
