Edgar Lungu, who served as Zambia’s sixth President from 2015 to 2021, will be put to rest on June 23, 2025, at the Presidential Burial Site in Lusaka, where five other Heads of State are interred.
Dr. Lungu passed away on June 5 at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, where he had gone to seek medical treatment.
Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, announced that the burial will be preceded by a church service in honor of Dr. Lungu, to be conducted by Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda at the Lusaka Showgrounds.
Speaking during a joint press briefing in Johannesburg, South Africa, this morning, Mr. Kangwa revealed that the national mourning period will run from June 15 to 23.
He stated that the state funeral will be presided over by President Hakainde Hichilema. Mr. Kangwa expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who supported the consultation process during this difficult time.
“The government further expresses gratitude to the South African systems and cooperation in facilitating the medical care and repatriation process,” he added.
Speaking at the same event, Family Spokesperson and Lawyer, Makebi Zulu revealed that Dr. Lungu’s remains will be repatriated from South Africa to Zambia on June 18 via a private charter flight arranged with support from well-wishers.
Mr. Zulu disclosed that upon arrival, the body will lie in state at Dr. Lungu’s Chifwema residence in Lusaka before being moved to the Mulungushi International Conference Centre for public viewing.
“The body will be at Mulungushi Conference Centre from Thursday, June 19, to Saturday, June 21, to allow the public to pay their last respects,” said Mr. Zulu.
He added that the body will be accompanied by a family member, the former president’s personal physician, and his Aide-de-Camp (ADC).
Furthermore, Mr. Zulu said that to avoid confusion surrounding the Patriotic Front (PF) party, it has been agreed that PF Acting President Given Lubinda will speak on behalf of the party.
