The University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) and some students yesterday converged at Monk Square to celebrate President Hakainde Hichilema’s 63rd birthday.
The celebration saw the union invite several government officials to join students in merrymaking, which included fireworks and cake sharing.
Speaking during the celebration and Pachipoto ceremony, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said the event was meant to honour President Hichilema for the support he has shown to students.
“We have come to join in and also eat, as we celebrate the birthday of a man who is leading this country toward great prosperity,” Mr Kawana said.
Speaking at the same event, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Fumba Chama emphasised that the country’s development cannot be achieved without an educated workforce.
Mr Chama noted that even with investment, development has little real impact without a well-educated population. He said this is why the government is supporting university students to actualise the country’s development goals.
Meanwhile, UNZASU Vice President Kelvin Ng’andu appealed to the government to increase meal allowances, stating that students would appreciate and celebrate such a gesture.
And UNZASU Secretary for Academic Affairs Bizwell Chiko thanked President Hichilema for the work he has done for students across all nine public institutions in the country.
Mr Chiko also noted that the government has heard the appeals of students who applied for a change of status from self sponsorship to government sponsorship and will respond soon.
