An organization that promotes good environmental conservation habits in Zambia has encouraged the public and students to engage in environmental education activities.

BirdWatch Zambia’s Habitat Conservation Officer, Godfrey Chishimba, advised members of the community, as well as learners in higher learning institutions and primary schools, to participate in caring for the environment and learning various ways of conserving the planet and its biodiversity.

“The organization has been educating school children on various vital topics aimed at promoting good environmental conservation habits among them,” Mr. Chishimba said in an interview with Lusaka Star.

Mr. Chishimba highlighted some of the thematic areas the organization is focusing on, such as migratory birds, garden birds, and their ecological importance.

“Last year, we focused on vultures, as they are very scarce, and the year before that we focused on plastic pollution,” he said.

Mr. Chishimba explained that programs such as ‘Important Bird Areas’ (IBAs) teach young learners to be more aware of their environment and the importance of bird conservation.

He expressed joy at the notable impact the initiative is making among young learners and further encouraged greater environmental conservation through initiatives like tree planting, creating art, making bird baths using recycled materials such as plastic, and other environmentally friendly activities.

Mr. Chishimba also stated that the organization is working to ensure that communities are equally aware of their initiatives through tree planting and community workshops.

“We also collaborate with universities such as the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the Copperbelt University (CBU) through various internship programs for environmental students. We also offer attachments, so that students can experience what we are working towards,” he revealed.
